DISPLAYING YOUR SPECIMENS
- Storing your wet specimens in a cool, dry space out of direct sunlight is ideal. Over-exposure to sunlight can have a bleaching effect on your specimens and can cause premature decay and excessive yellowing of the preserving liquid.
- NEVER SHAKE YOUR WET SPECIMEN. Shaking the jar can stir up sediment and detach hairs and pieces of flesh from the specimen and suspend them in the liquid, making it appear cloudy. Shaking the jar can also damage the integrity of the specimen and contribute to the specimen’s deterioration.
- Check the stability of shelves before placing heavy jars on them to prevent dangerous falls and damage. In case the wet specimen’s vessel breaks- DO NOT pick up any broken shards of glass or the specimen itself with your bare hands. Open any windows or doors to ventilate the space. If the preserving liquid comes into contact with your skin, wash the area with soap and lukewarm running water for no less than 15 minutes. If liquid gets onto your clothing, remove them immediately.
- The outside surface of the glass jar can be gently and carefully wiped down with glass cleaner (windex) and a paper towel to keep it looking crystal clear. Be cautious when doing this as the outside of the jar can become slippery and may slip out of your grasp and has the potential to break and injure you.
